GRĪNBERGS ANDRIS

We were not making anything artificially. Somebody had an idea: one started to draw, another to write something, we were reading and playing music the whole night,

I have always been interested in the natural synthesis of arts, where the movement unites with costumes and the scenery of the place,

I like body because what is beautiful that is beautiful. An old body is not ugly or the young beautiful. Everything depends from how you see it.

That what you can call a performance and happening, has been a part of Andris Grīnberg`s lifestyle. But artist is so intensively living in present, that he doesn't value much these past events. Ideas of his happenings cropped up in their friends company where different people gathered: poets, painters, photographers. The influence of these happenings was often caused by some social event, for instance, the war in Vietnam, some personally strong impression from Fellini`s movie or a good book. At the beginning Andris Grīnbergs was making more theatralized events, where special costumes were sewn for all the participants. This kind of event was his own wedding ceremony named The Wedding of Jesus Christ that happened in 1972 on the seaside near a forest. The evening started with blindfolding eyes to all the participants. The task was to find the partner of the evening. As in a normal wedding, there was a wedding bed, placed on the coast. The happening was like a ritual where movement from harmony to destruction took place. The bed collapsed and the only thought left was that there is no sense for anything.

Happenings that occurred next at Andris Grīnbergs home were always very personal. Usually they were about a certain theme that was acted out by using bodies and clothes of the participating people, who sometimes knew each other, but sometimes were absolute strangers. Andris Grīnbergs already then was interested how the relations of people develop and how everybody presents himself. Successful events were those where the participants discovered something new in themselves.

Andris Grīnbergs realized his fondness of people in the action The People met, lost and those who stayed , where he got acquainted with people on the street, starting with such who visit refined openings in the opera and ending with homeless. Andris Grīnbergs spoke with these people, they were photographed and notes of the author in the form of diary with photos were published in newspaper.
