Performance is the show of the visual artist/ personality, this is action made in time,
Performance – it is only word. If I call something a performance, others will call it too, if I name it theatre, others will use this word,
I never make a performance as an empty form. I always think for which part of society I make it.
The most known performance done by Ivars Mailītis is the action People as Banners that he made several times with his wife Inese Mailīte or participants from the Theatre Studio Nr.8. in these actions made from 1988 till 1992 he twisted a black, synthetic string round the bodies of the people, creating alive textile sculptures. As this was the time of Latvian National Awakening artist talked about freedom with the help of his works. He twisted a string around a human body, transforming it from a free to a tied moveless ball. He used the same material in the performances with the same title, only the themes were different. He together with Theatre Studio Nr.8 participated in the international performance festival S.O.F.A. in Neeborg , Denmark in 1991, where he tied together many people in his performance. It was interesting to see how relations among mutually tied people formed and changed. This performance manifested the idea about the unity of all the people. If one link falls out, the rest will change as well.
Ivars Mailītis involves people in countless numbers in his other actions. His action Aurora and Worm happened in 1987 in the Manege of Sports in the crowd of many dancing young adults. 40 meters long worm, leaded by 20 people was breaking through the crowd in a huge sports hall till it crashed with a ship called Aurora , which was carried in on straight hands. The ship Aurora splitted the worm into two pieces, because it stroke through it.
One of the most interesting but also dangerous actions made by Ivars Mailītis and Ansis Egle happened one evening in the same center of Riga . Not having warned anybody a secret military parade with war technique from different times, guns and armed cars suddenly appeared. Cars went in a queue on the central streets of Riga , armed young people in military clothes and corpus of nurses were actively acting in the cars. Parade was a shock not only to accidental passers-by but also for the police, that didn't understand what was happening. The parade ended with a crowd of people following the queue of cars.
Ivars Mailītis is not keeping to one concrete style or one kind of conception in his creative actions, but he does what is actual and interesting for him in every moment
