Performance is the way to mark places important to you, places where you dream about something or where you want to come back,
Performance gets into different relation with time and oneself,
Performances have to occur rare to be true.
For the artist Ieva Sara Breikša first comes an idea, and then she chooses how to express it. A performance for her is like a continuation and explanation of her drawings.
The place of performance event is very important for Ieva Sara Breikša. Usually she chooses public places with many people: supermarkets, underground pedestrian's crossing. These are places where she dreams about something or she would like to come back. With the help of performance, she marks the place and makes it close to herself. Artist can play the same performance for several times, changing only the place of the event.
In the performance Thirst – Why? , which happened in the pedestrians underground tunnel in Riga in 2004, her inner movement and upturn was important. This performance is connected with the artist's personal experience. The source of it is a story from the Bible about Mary Magdalene, who through the torment and suffering comes to purification and lucidity. In the performance the woman in red is acting amid passers-by. She pushes an empty supermarket carriage forward and back, her face and hands are turned against heaven. Her action makes strong contrast in the environment of the tunnel, - where somebody is begging, somebody selling something, but others are going to their everyday jobs. Then she goes up to the pail and takes white pieces of gauze out of it, then she puts them over her shoulders and over the head. Every movement and object is a concrete symbol. Then she puts on a white dress and symbolically washes red cloth she was wearing at the beginning. Then she puts it over a string to dry. After that she pours white color in the form of cross over the red cloth and sings a song I don't know how to love him from rock-opera Jesus Christ Superstar . This performance is very serious and comic at the same time, because that is how Ieva Sara Breikša looks on everyday life too. Performance for her is something where she gets over herself and plays some significant theme for herself in action.
